SaaS Funding & Equity—Detailed Writing Samples

This is a collection of two guides that I co-wrote With Dave Robinson for Driven Insights and that are published on their blog. These writing portfolio samples are based on a theme of funding the growth of SaaS businesses through debt and equity. I wrote these guides for businesses that want to:

  • Understand options for funding the growth of a SaaS product and company.

  • Compare and contrast debt and equity as funding options.

  • Investigate venture capitalism vs. lending at each growth stage.

You will find links to each published sample below.

PRIVATE EQUITY VS. VENTURE CAPITAL: WHICH IS BEST FOR YOUR SAAS FIRM?

Venture capital (VC) and private equity (PE) are among the most common sources of SaaS equity funding, but which is the right choice for your company? Understanding the unique advantages and drawbacks of each is a great place to start. While PE and VC share some common themes, there are also fundamental differences in their approaches, requirements, and goals.

It’s a delicate balancing act. Raising much-needed SaaS capital can accelerate growth, but it often comes at the expense of owners’ equity. We understand the pressures you’re under—from quantifying your cash needs, through seeking out the best investment partners, to securing capital at the right time with the right terms.

DEBT VS. EQUITY: SELECTING THE RIGHT TYPE OF SAAS CAPITAL

Two of the primary forms of SaaS capital—debt and equity financing—are often defined by their drawbacks. Debt financing, as the name implies, requires taking on a loan and repaying principal with interest. Equity financing avoids the need for current payment, but requires founders to give up a portion of their ownership.

Both options can provide much-needed capital to fuel growth, but if you’re a SaaS founder or CEO, it can seem like a choice between the lesser of two evils.
